Yosuke Sakai

Painter, Programmer
Tokyo , Japan
Yosuke Sakai (1980-) is a sumi-e artist based in Tokyo, Japan. Sumi-e is a Japanese traditional brush painting style with black ink in all possible gradations ranging from the purest black to the lightest gray. One piece of Hokusai Katsushika's sumi-e work inspired Yosuke to get into sumi-e and start studying under the sumi-e artist Shukou Tsuchiya since 2009. Yosuke has presented numerous exhibitions, live painting performances and workshops. His works vary from a traditional to a contemporary style. In live paintings he especially likes tension, which comes from one of the characteristics of sumi-e, in that a painting cannot be redone and forces him to handle unexpected situations. Additionally, he is a programmer. With interest in the computational approach to art and expanding the world of sumi-e, he enrolled in the School for Poetic Computation 2015 Fall.
In 2017 he started new collaborative projects with a musician Hiroto Takeuchi, which aim to connect live painting and real time composition of music, and participated in the International live Coding Conference 2017 and Algorave Tokyo in 2017.
