Static Respirator is a piece for electronically augmented trumpet using the Minimally Invasive Gesture Sensing Interface (MIGSI) for real-time sound synthesis and processing. Gestural information is captured and used to trigger, control and manipulate various parameters of the accompanying granular processing, synthesis, and spatialization Max/MSP patch. Soft exhales, whispers, and delicate air sounds are transformed into dense, fervent gestures (controlled by MIGSI)—at times reminiscent of a thousand scuttling insects, at others teetering between urgency and fragility. As the piece progresses, valve activity and hand tension data is captured and used to influence a semi-autonomous feedback-based chaotic synthesis engine.
