Both painting and interface, “Her Painting for Performance” explores potentials in musical abstraction through personalized communication between an artist and her computer. The painting is a meeting of and medium for sonic and visual expression. The painting has 52 controls programmed to a granular synthesis and effects patch in Max MSP. It plays a composition written by the artist for celesta, bassoon, cello, bass and drum set, recorded with MIDI. The painting is performed in real-time, with a USB camera placed above the performer’s hands to send a close-up of her hands operating the controller to live projection.
