Imaginary Trainscape
by
Takuto Fukuda & Ana Dall'Ara-Majek

Imaginary Trainscape is a theatrical structural improvisation. This performance evokes a nostalgia for the golden age of Canadian trains. While appreciating its decadent, this improvisation also dreams of the Renaissance of railways in North America. In association with the transmission mechanism between a boiler and driving wheels of steam locomotives, this performance explores two types of synchronicity: inter-corporeal synchrony and sonic-corporeal synchrony, meaning synchronicity between performers and the one between sounds and bodily gestures of each performer, respectively. Our self-made analogue/digital musical instruments: an augmented Theremin and a gyro-based gestural controller - mediate these synchronies, and empower our mental boilers, which enthusiastically trigger an over-saturation of synthetic sounds from the instruments.
