lichens - for soprano saxophone and interactive audio visual system
by Ben Carey

lichens is a work for improvising saxophonist and audio-visual system. The work places the performer in a symbiotic relationship with a living audio-visual object, where both improviser and system learn from and adapt to each other in performance. This conception of human-machine interactivity is modelled upon the natural process of symbiosis, with the title 'lichens' referring to a composite organism exhibiting a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae.
