Vibez by ALGOBABEZ = Joanne Armitage & Shelly Knotts
ALGOBABEZ are Joanne Armitage and Shelly Knotts coding crunchy error driven sound synthesis and MIDI patterns in SuperCollider. Their performances embrace human and computational failure and error working around network issues, bugs and communication problems to form cohesive musical structures. Vibez is a telehaptic performance where the duo perform geographically separated, but feeling each other’s presence through data streams mapped to touch sensation. The transcontinental Algorave duo have been working on technical solutions to recreate the physical closeness of co-located collaboration. Since half of the band relocated to the southern hemisphere they have been performing telematically at raves around the world, sending one physical body to the performance space while beaming in the audio waves of the other over the internet. More recently, they have been working on mechanically replicating themselves through sensors, vibrations and algorithms. They will perform with a sensor system (HR and GSR) which turns biophysical data into haptic feedback and visualisations. They will embed an extended sense of their physicality into performance, and share with each-other and the audience their levels of stress, moments of stasis and general head- bobbing enjoyment.
