Circles was created in response to the alienating experience of concert music, where the audience is confined to seating far away from the performer, who reads from a score hidden from their sight. I was interested in making the score more interesting to the spectator, and allowing the audience to move among the performers instead of being confined to seats. Performers each wear a helmet containing a Raspberry Pi computer, sensor for color and motion, speaker, and battery for power. Pure Data is used for audio processing. Changes in computer processing are dictated by changes in colors and movement of the performers picked up by the sensor. Performances by Annie Stevens (percussion) and Kyle Hutchins (saxophone).
