Interactive Argentine Tango Workshop: Learn How to Dance + Interactive System Demo

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

In the first half, we will teach participants the basics of Argentine tango. The dance is grounded in the relation between two moving bodies, leader and follower, who together improvise rhythmic stylized steps and movements. We will focus on the basics of the nonverbal conversation – how to lead and follow simple walking steps and ochos (turning figure-8 steps).

No previous dance experience is required. Experienced tango dancers are encouraged to skip this first half of the workshop.

In the second half, we will introduce participants to Interactive Tango Milonga, an interactive system for social dance allowing dancers to drive musical outcomes in real-time via their dance movement. Motion sensors are attached to the ankles and back of each dancer, and data coming from these sensors are then translated into tango music via computational algorithms. Participants will take turns wearing the motion sensors and driving the system outcomes. Dancers not using the system will also dance to the music that system creates, along with the couple that is driving the creation of that music with their movements. We will also provide a short performance/demonstration of our use of the system for participants.
