It is well-known that music technology has a gender diversity problem. NIME is not immune - in 2017, 8% of the authors of papers, demos and posters were women. This is not representative of the diversity of people working in our domain.
We ask, then, why women and gender non-conforming people do not publish at NIME, and what is the NIME loses by not addressing this lack of parity.
This workshop aims to take a first step to better community diversity, by gathering together women and gender non-conforming participants present at NIME, as well as those interested in addressing this problem as allies. It’s common to hear that community members want to address this problem but don’t know where to start, so this workshop will have a strong focus on identifying issues and formulating solutions.
Topics of discussion will include:
- An overview of women and gender non-conforming people within NIME, their practices and their impact; Examining the benefits of diversity in music technology;
- Discussing strategies for inclusivity;
- Brainstorming solutions that can begin to make NIME a conference that is more diverse, wide-reaching, and representative of the practitioners working within it, and how attendees can support this
